TLEIKW AANi, THE "BERRIED" LANDSCAPE: THE STRUCTURE OF TLINGIT EDIBLE FRUIT RESOURCES AT GLACIER
ثبت نشده
چکیده
ASTRACT.This paper analyzes the structure of a relatively neglected resource in Tlingit and Northwest Coast etlmology: berries. Historically, like salmon streams and other key resource areas among the Tlingil of Southeast Alaska, prime berry patches were named, owned, managed, and celebrated as places. Certain berries, including those found in the vicinity of Glacier Bay National Park, were recognized as being of exceptionally high quality and abundance. Glacier Bay berries were internationally renowned, widely traded, and comprised an important nutritional component of the diet and symbolic element in ceremonial feasts. Maintaining the productivity of prized berry patches involved a variety of techniques and strategies to control supply and demand and thus avoid shortages. Despite National Park Service restrictions on hunting and fishing in Glacier Bay, berry picking remains an important communal subsistence activity in the park--one relatively free from controversy and competition-that continues to bind modern Tlingit groups to their ancient homelands.

Study of nitrate status in some vegetables collected from Kermanshah vegetables markets
Background and Objective: Much of the nitrate consumption by humans in the daily diet comes from vegetables. The high concentration of nitrate in edible parts of vegetables causes toxicity, anemia for children and nitrous amine production in adults. Nitrous amine may results in cancer. Samples were collected from four main vegetable markets in Kermanshah city in summer 2019 to investigate the c...
متن کاملEffect of Mining Activities on Structure and Function of Rangeland Ecosystem Using the Landscape Function Analysis (LFA) (Case study: Dareh Zereshk Copper Mine, Yazd, Iran).
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of copper extraction on the structure and function of rangelands ecosystem around the mine area in Dareh Zereshk, Yazd province, Iran. Three study sites were considered at the specified intervals of the mine (0-200, 200-500 and 500-1000m). This research was conducted from 2012 to 2013. In each location, three linear transects with a length of 50 m...
متن کاملPhysicochemical changes of leaf in different position and fruit in four edible fig cultivars
Fig is one of the first plants cultivated by humans that has global expansion. This study was conducted to investigate the physicochemical changes in different position of leaf (2 year cutting, Leaf next to immature syconium, Leaf next to ripe fruit, Leaf next to overripe fruit, Leaf next to fallen fruit) and fruit in four edible cultivars (Matti, Shah-Anjir, Sabz, Siah) as factorial experiment...
متن کاملPostharvest Application of Gum and Mucilage as Edible Coating on Postharvest Life and Quality of Strawberry Fruit
Strawberries have a very thin layer coating that easily disappears and are perishables a lot pre-harvest as such nearly 30 to 40 percent of strawberry fruits will be wasted at interval between harvest and consumption. In this study have been investigated the effect of using psyllium mucilage (Plantago psyllium) in concentrations of 6.25, 12.5 and 25 ml/l as well as Arabic gum and Arjan as edibl...
متن کاملMaintaining Quality Properties of Grape CV. ‘Bidaneh Ghermez’ by Chitosan Edible Coating, Thymus Essential Oil and their Concomitant Application
The application of edible coatings is one of the most innovative methods to extend the commercial shelf-life of fruits and vegetables by acting as a gas barrier. In this study, the effects of chitosan, thymus essential oil and their combination in extending shelf life of grape (‘Bidaneh Ghermez’) and quality properties were investigated. Grapes were harvested when were fully ripened and their t...
